The Schengen Agreement

In 1984 France and Germany agreed to gradually dismantle their joint borders.  In the same year Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands did the same.

In the meantime, another 21 nations have been added to the five founding members of the Schengen Agreement - including non-EU countries. Thus, the Schengen area now covers more than 7,700 kilometers of national borders.
